Goreme is stunning!

Goreme is a complex of medieval painted cave churches and monasteries carved out of the volcanic tuff in the Cappadocia region of Turkey.  The wall paintings in these sanctuaries are unique examples of 4-13th century Byzantine art.  Many of the paintings have damage or gouged out faces from the 8-9th century period of iconoclasm when certain Byzantine religious abhorred the use of human images.  In spite of the damage, the artwork remains breathtaking - especially after having to climb up the side of a mountain and into a cave to see it!

The video is of a woman singing a portion of a christian liturgy in Russian. The acoustics are amazing! Our Turkish guide had to keep reminding us that singing of religious songs in this national park was forbidden.
