Grumpy Old Men Church

Center City Lutheran Church & Cemetery, Center City Minnesota. I live near this church.  I love to take pictures of it (although I am a pastor of a different congregation and denomination). My family calls this the “Grumpy Old Men Church” because it was featured in the closing scene of the 1993 movie.

The history of the church:  The Chisago Lake Evangelical Lutheran Church is the second-oldest Lutheran congregation in Minnesota. It was founded in 1854 and permanent pastor arrived in 1855.  A wood-frame church was built in 1856. A brick church was built in 1881–1883, but it was struck by lightning and burned in 1888. The congregation rebuilt the church immediately, using the masonry contractors as before. The bell was installed in the steeple in 1890, and a clock was installed in 1907.

I have driven by the cemetery (pictured) too many times to count, but have never noticed from ground level that the trees in the center of the cemetery for a cross from above.  Very cool.  Unfortunately, probably not many people know.
