Reflection Pond, Chapel, History, and Fountain…. Where?   Of course in Lakewood Cemetery!!!

Reflection pond, chapel, history, and fountain…. Where?   Of course in Lakewood Cemetery!!!   So yes it’s a cemetery.   But it’s also an arboretum!   And it’s beautiful.  How often do you hear that about a cemetery?

I stopped at the visitors center and got a map.  The new fountain was fun and I got a quick straight down shot with the drone.

If you are there to look around remember it is an active cemetery and to respect people and grief.  If you look close I don’t believe any people are in the photos!  Two sets of  people meeting for a picnic lunch graciously said my drone would not disturb them and I made sure it did not!

Founded in 1871, Lakewood’s story begins with several New England businessmen and women who came to Minnesota in the 1800s and helped build the city of Minneapolis. They envisioned Lakewood as a place for the city’s community members to be buried in a peaceful and beautiful setting.  Driving through the names and dates of prominent Minnesotans are etched literally in stone, from early on to modern day.

The reflection pool is very cool.  It is part of the Memorial Mausoleum and Columbarium (Modernist style)  a blend of Minnesota granite, bronze and steel.

The center piece of the cemetery is the Memorial Chapel.   It is stunning.  I love churches, but I was surprised to find this in a cemetery or even in the US.  It is said it is a priceless architectural treasure—one of the most perfect examples of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States. When it was completed in 1910, it was the only building in America with an authentic mosaic interior…. visitors have been astonished to find such an outstanding architectural jewel in the heart of the city… Designed by prominent Minneapolis architect Harry Wild Jones and modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Looking for drone photos or footage visit;  www.highergrounddrone.com  #forestlakemn #wyomingmn #chisagolakes #centercitymn #stacymn #meinminnesota #explorechisagolakes #lakesareachamber #lindstrommn #minneapolis #lakewoodcemetery #lakewoodmemorialchapel
