San Remigio Fountain on the Via Appia
“(Paul) lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him, proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.” Acts 28:30-31
Along the Via Appia where Paul traveled his last miles to Rome, there were public fountains for refreshing travelers and their animals. Some of these survive to today. We saw one outside of the city of Formiae on the Via Appia. The San Remigio fountain. The English translation of the sign pictured is: “Public source of Roman times, dating back to the late republican period, at the 88th mile of the urban stretch of Appia. Lying on a base of limestone blocks, the rectangular tank measures m. 5.25 x m. 1.20 and is m high. 0,88. The water came out of two huge masks, one of which is still visible, located on the sides, which probably represented the sun and the moon, symbolizing the perennial gushing of water.”
Paul and his companions and guard would have passed by this fountain and could easily have taken refreshment here!!
