Mosaics & Frescoes. The rotunda in Thessaloniki Greece was build around 305 CE, possibly intended to be the eventual mausoleum of Emperor Galerius. The building has served a variety of purposes over the centuries including as a Byzantine church in the late 4th / early 5th centuries CE.
The mosaics are some of the best preserved anywhere from that time period. There is also a beautiful fresco in one of the apses depicting Christ’s ascension with Mary below surrounded by the apostles and two angels.
The dome’s circular mosaic ring depicts martyrs in front of architectural structures - heavenly Jerusalem.
