Tel Megiddo
Megiddo is an ancient city in Israel that played a significant role in biblical history. Its strategic location at the intersection of major trade routes made it an important site for battles and other historical events. Megiddo is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, including in Judges 5:19 and 2 Kings 23:29-30, where it is described as the site of battles between the Israelites and the Canaanites, and between King Josiah of Judah and Pharaoh Necho of Egypt, respectively.
In the New Testament, Megiddo is referenced in Revelation 16:16 as the site of a future battle between the forces of good and evil, also known as Armageddon.
Megiddo is also known for its significant archaeological sites, including the six-chambered gate mentioned in 1 Kings 9:15, Solomon's Stables, and its water system.
I am not sure if it was at this site or another, but the common Old Testament reference to the men or elders sitting at the gate and making decisions was actually more in-between the walls of the gate and was an actual enclosed room with a kind of build in bench - not just a bunch of guys standing outside!
The water system at Megiddo is considered to be one of the most advanced in the ancient world and was vital to the survival of the city during times of siege. It was amazing to descend into it! It was very deep and I can’t imagine how it was dug back that long ago. The tunnels are tall enough to walk though and don’t seem possible for their day.
The ingenuity of the ancients constantly amazes me. I am convinced we have a huge misconception about the past and people’s intelligence and skills.
