Church of the Holy Sepulcher - Jerusalem
Church of the Holy Sepulcher : One of the churches commissioned by emperor Constantine’s mother Helena in the early to mid 300s AD to mark places significant to the life of Christ. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is placed over the sites believed to be Golgotha and the rock cut burial tomb of Jesus. Several Christian denominations share control of the church- Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, Ethiopian, Coptic and Syriac Christians. Visiting the church, a place of Christian pilgrimage for centuries now, is a full sensory experience- incense, incredible art work and architecture, the sounds of services in many languages, bells chiming, people in prayer. So many nooks and crannies to explore. There are archeological discoveries still being made in this church even in the last decade. “Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid. Luke 23:50-53 ESV.
