Damascus Gate

The Damascus Gate is one of the main Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is located in the wall on the city’s northwest side and connects to a highway leading out to Shechem and from there, in times past, to the capital of Syria, Damascus.

This video is an interesting one, it was our first night in Jerusalem and we had gotten settled into our hotel. We were very excited and opted to walk around the Old City on our own. We walked into this area and I walked up the steps to get a video and photo. And at that moment a small demonstration broke out (turns out that the plaza area of this gate is host to many demonstrations). Margery and our friends were still in the immediate gate area. Police responded very quickly and closed the gate with barricades. And in a moments time our first night in Jerusalem, late evening, I was separated from the group outside the walls of the Old City!

All turned out fine - there was a little area that police allowed controlled entry and exit through the gate. But there was a brief moment where both Margery and I were a little nervous.
