The Seven Churches of Asia Minor
“I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.”
”I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” Revelation 1:9–11 ESV
In May 2023 we traveled to Turkey and were so excited to see the small excavation of Thyatira, which was the one church of the book of Revelation that we had not visited.
So much has been written about these letters to the important early churches of Asia Minor and their symbolism and the how vaarious interpretations make sense related to each church’s location/geopraphy/geology/civic situation etc. Too much to go into here! What is definitely true is that the issues of the early church still plague us today. We struggle to show Christ’s love and compassion while still holding to our principles. We struggle at times to maintain our enthusiasm for the gospel. It will be a struggle to the end to be in the world but not of it.
